One of my favorites.
Beverley Jackson: Splendid Slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition
Fascinating look at an extremely disturbing tradition. One of my great-grandmothers (on my mother's side) had bound feet. I saw a pair of handmade slippers for bound feet in an antique store in Nantucket, and had to have them--the most expensive shoes I own! Anyway, after that I bought this book. As for "erotic," a chapter called "sacrifice at the altar of beauty" explores some of the many notions of sexual attractiveness which require painful bodily alterations or embellishments.
Michael A. Dirr: Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs: An Illustrated Encyclopedia
I would love this book even if I lived in a studio apartment (maybe even more so). You always know exactly where Mr. Dirr stands: "... I have never recommended, at least when conscious, a poplar," or "[the oakleaf hydrangea] is one of the most handsome plants that landscape designers have at their disposal." Nicky Epstein: Knitting on the Edge : Ribs * Ruffles * Lace * Fringes * Floral * Points & Picots - The Essential Collection of 350 Decorative Borders
If this doesn't get those creative juices flowing...but why does the author reference a symbol for borders in which "both sides are the same or equally attractive" in the introductory notes, then not use the symbol once? (If she did, I missed it). A minor quibble, to be sure.

Back in the U.S., um, A.

Apologies to any Beatles fans out there. Anyway, we are Stateside for the summer; I can already see that this entire Italy experience will be fraught with mixed feelings--glad to be back/sorry to be leaving, glad to see old friends & family/sorry to leave new friends behind, glad to be rattling away in my native English, sorry to be losing my hard-won gains in Italian a little more each day. And sorry to have left behind what must be one of the best photo-shoot locations ever; do you think I can Photoshop myself into these rooms modeling my future knit projects?!

At least my item (is that vague enough?) for the winter IK is done and I can blog easy: work in some loose ends, write up some long-promised patterns. I'd also love to knit Lutea for myself this summer, but I'm having a helluva time finding any Classic Elite Sundance. (Anyone know where I can score some of that stuff?) I may have to substitute a similar yarn, or--more entertainingly--a completely different weight yarn. Whee! (I know, I probably need a margarita or a mojito or some new shoes--my fun meter appears to be in desperate need of recalibration.)

June_22_047_web Speaking of working in loose ends, I finally did that with my Dayflower Lace top, and even wore it in public! Sometime in the next few days I'll post for the Create Along and cross-post here. (Recognize the earrings?)

Welcome back to the States! And you'll be back in Como in no time, in a very beautiful season no less. I love how the DayFlower camisole turned out. The lace straps are just the right touch. Did you find a good conversation partner(s) for your family while you're living la dolce vita in the US?

Love the Dayflower!! Also, I finished up my Lutea last night and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!! I tried to take a photo of myself using the camera timer and all I got was either photos of me looking weird or photos cutting me in half.

I love how your dayflower lace turned out. You definitely have a knack for seeing a project through and getting it just right. The effect is lovely.
